Goals and motivation

Practise these
  1. 1. Why do you want to do an MBA?

What they look for: Connect where you are now, where you want to be, and why an MBA is the bridge. Avoid "for a better salary" as the only reason.

  2. 2. Why this institute?

What they look for: Mention specific things — a course, a specialisation, a club, the pedagogy — and why they matter for your goal.

  3. 3. What are your short-term and long-term goals?

What they look for: Short-term should be specific (role and industry). Long-term can be broader but should follow logically.

  4. 4. Why now? Why not after a few more years of work?

What they look for: Explain what you have learned so far and why this is the right point to step back and study.

  5. 5. If you do not get an MBA admit this year, what will you do?

What they look for: Show you have a plan and are not desperate. Improving your profile and applying again is a fine answer.

Your background

Practise these
  1. 6. Walk us through your work experience.

What they look for: Focus on responsibilities and impact, with numbers where possible. Be ready for detailed follow-ups on anything you mention.

  2. 7. Explain a concept from your graduation subject.

What they look for: Panels often test basics from your degree. Revise core concepts — engineers, commerce and arts graduates all get asked.

  3. 8. Your academic scores are low in one area. Why?

What they look for: Be honest and brief, then point to what shows your ability now.

  4. 9. Tell us about a time you led a team.

What they look for: Use STAR. Leadership can be informal — a college fest, a project, a team at work.

  5. 10. What are your hobbies? Tell us more about one.

What they look for: Only list hobbies you actually pursue. Panels love to go deep on them.

Awareness and thinking

Practise these
  1. 11. What is a recent business or economic news story that interested you?

What they look for: Pick one you understand well, explain what happened and give your own view.

  2. 12. What is your view on a current policy or industry trend?

What they look for: Present both sides, then take a reasoned position. Panels test reasoning, not the "right" answer.

  3. 13. How would you improve a product or service you use every day?

What they look for: Structure your answer: who the users are, what the problem is, one or two ideas, and how you would measure success.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an IIM personal interview?

Typically 15 to 30 minutes with a panel of two or three. Many IIMs also have a written ability test (WAT) on the same day.

Do freshers get different questions from candidates with work experience?

Yes. Freshers get more questions on academics, projects and internships; experienced candidates get more on their work and career switch.

What should I revise before an MBA interview?

Basics of your graduation subject, your work profile, current affairs of the last few months, and clear answers to why MBA and why this college.
