14 questions · From basics to the new architecture

React Native interviews mix React fundamentals with mobile-specific questions — navigation, performance, native code and releases. Here they are by experience level.

Freshers (0–2 years)

Practise this level
  1. 1. What is the difference between React and React Native?

What they look for: Same component model; React Native renders to native views instead of the DOM.

  2. 2. What are props and state?

What they look for: Props come from the parent and are read-only; state is owned by the component and changes trigger re-renders.

  3. 3. Explain useState and useEffect with an example.

What they look for: Show a data fetch in useEffect with a dependency array and cleanup.

  4. 4. What is the difference between FlatList and ScrollView?

What they look for: FlatList virtualises long lists; ScrollView renders everything at once.

  5. 5. How do you style components in React Native?

What they look for: StyleSheet objects with Flexbox. Mention that flexDirection defaults to column.

  1. 6. How do you handle navigation?

What they look for: React Navigation stacks, tabs and deep links. Mention passing params and handling auth flows.

  2. 7. Redux, Zustand or Context — how do you choose?

What they look for: Explain the trade-offs for app size and team, and when server-state libraries like React Query fit better.

  3. 8. How do you prevent unnecessary re-renders?

What they look for: React.memo, useCallback, useMemo and stable keys — used where profiling shows a real problem.

  4. 9. How do you store data securely on the device?

What they look for: Secure storage (Keychain or Keystore wrappers) for tokens; AsyncStorage only for non-sensitive data.

  5. 10. How do you handle different behaviour on Android and iOS?

What they look for: Platform module, platform-specific files, and testing on real devices for both.

Senior (5+ years)

  1. 11. What is the new architecture (Fabric, TurboModules, JSI)?

What they look for: It replaces the old async bridge with direct JavaScript-to-native calls. Explain what it improves and the migration effort.

  2. 12. How do you find and fix performance problems?

What they look for: Profile JS and UI threads, fix heavy lists, move animations to the UI thread with Reanimated, and trim bundle size.

  3. 13. When and how would you write a native module?

What they look for: When no library covers a platform API. Explain the structure and how you keep it typed and tested.

  4. 14. How do you ship updates safely?

What they look for: Staged store rollouts, OTA updates for JS-only fixes where allowed, crash monitoring and quick rollback.

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn Expo for interviews?

Yes. Expo is widely used now, and many companies expect you to know when to use it and its limits.

Do React Native interviews include JavaScript questions?

Almost always — closures, promises, async/await and the event loop come up often.

Is native Android or iOS knowledge required?

Not for most roles, but basic understanding helps a lot for senior positions and debugging.
